Creating Calm: Restorative Trips for Families Under Fire

In addition to our ongoing Restorative Trips for Youth, which bring around 300 children each week out of the rocket-stricken north for emotional relief and leadership training, Dror Israel has launched a new initiative to support entire families. Our first Restorative Trip for Families recently concluded, providing much-needed respite for families from Nahariya and Akko in the peaceful surroundings of Mitzpe Ramon.

Meeting the local alpacas

Over three days, the families were able to disconnect from the constant sirens, rockets and stress, enjoying a range of activities organized by educators from Dror Israel's Mitzpe Ramon and Akko Educators' Kibbutzim. The program included sunset hikes along the crater’s edge, stargazing, outdoor activities for the children, and even woodworking sessions for teens. A visit to the local alpaca farm was a particular highlight for everyone.

Polina Zuckerman Shunin, who attended the trip with her family, shared her gratitude:“We all need a break from the situation, especially now that things have worsened. I work shifts as a nurse, and it was like fate—I saw the ad for the trip, and everything just worked out. I called my sister and said, ‘Come on, be spontaneous!’ We loaded the kids into the car and went!”

Her sister, Yulia Zaksher, added:“Here, it’s not just the quiet of turning off your phone. It’s real peace of mind—being able to relax without worrying. We also met other wonderful families from our area who are going through the same thing.”

These restorative trips are essential for providing families a chance to recharge, both mentally and emotionally, while also building connections with others facing similar challenges. As the situation in the north persists, we remain committed to offering these opportunities to as many families as possible.

The next family trip, dedicated to more families from Akko, is set to begin this weekend, and we look forward to continuing this important program to bring peace and strength to those who need it most.
